This page sets out the health and safety supports at our campus, the mental health services you can reach as a post-secondary student in British Columbia, and the addiction and overdose supports available to you — including where to obtain free naloxone and free naloxone training.

Where Else to Get Free Naloxone in British Columbia

Free take-home naloxone kits are distributed across British Columbia through the BC Centre for Disease Control's Take Home Naloxone program. In addition to our campus reception, kits are available from:

• Participating community pharmacies throughout Surrey and the Lower Mainland
• Health authority and community health clinics, including Fraser Health sites
• Community and harm reduction organizations registered with the Take Home Naloxone program

Naloxone Training

Naloxone training teaches you how to recognise an opioid overdose, how to respond, and how to give naloxone. Training is free, takes about 20 minutes, and is open to everyone — you do not need any medical background.

Students who complete the training are welcome to collect a free take-home naloxone kit from our campus reception.

Recognising and Responding to an Overdose

Signs of an opioid overdose include: slow or stopped breathing; blue or grey lips, nails or skin; a person who cannot be woken; choking, gurgling or snoring sounds; very small pupils; and cold or clammy skin.

Addiction and Substance Use Supports

If you are concerned about your own substance use, or about someone else's, confidential help is available at no cost. You can also speak with Guildford College staff in confidence and we will help you connect with the right service.

Guildford College treats any conversation about substance use as confidential. Asking for help, or collecting a naloxone kit from reception, has no effect on your enrolment, your standing in your program, or your study permit.

Mental Health Services

Every student enrolled at a post-secondary institution in British Columbia can access free, confidential mental health support. You do not need a referral and you do not need to be in crisis to use these services.
